CHAPTER 9

Jeremiah waved from the front porch following Ada and Ollie’s speedy departure. Maybe he shouldn’t have said that it was a date. He meant it to be playful but based on the way Ada had rushed out the door, it might have been a mistake.

But he was still feeling hopeful. Everything had gone according to his plan. Ada probably thought he was the most scatter-brained man she’d ever met by not arranging transportation during his stay. But how else was he going to spend time with her?

One thing was for sure. She loved that dog. It is going to break her heart when I take him with me to Pennsylvania. And maybe spending time with her and the dog would make it that much harder for her to separate from the animal when the time came, but he couldn’t help himself. He’d been drawn to her since he’d first laid eyes on her during his last trip here, despite the circumstances.

He'd almost embarrassed himself earlier when he had let his emotions get the best of him. It was still hard to imagine that Nellie and John were really gone. Being at their home and among their belongings had both a strange calming effect on him, brought on by the familiarity, but also a sadness that lingered in his heart. He would never smell Nellie’s fabulous baking or see her sweet smile. There would be no more trips to the barn to puff on a cigar with John, or sharing jokes and feeling like they were getting away with something. Jeremiah hadn’t ever liked to smoke, not even the smell, but he would covet the special times with his uncle forever.

The exhaustion he’d told Ada about was real. He could barely keep his eyes open as he closed the windows. He made a fresh fire, and the house took on an entirely different smell with new cedar burning. He laid on the couch, unable to bring himself to sleep in Nellie and John’s bed, the only bedroom downstairs. Upstairs would be freezing.

He pulled the blanket over him, the one he’d draped around Ada’s shoulders. Bringing it up to his face, he breathed in the scent of her . . . of lavender.

Why isn’t she married? Surely, she’d been courted. Perhaps, like him, she was just waiting for the right person?

Two or three weeks. That wasn’t very long to get to know someone. But that was the agreement he and his father made, deciding that was ample time to do the repairs and get the house ready to sell.

His thoughts drifted back to his aunt and uncle, the loss heavy on his chest and in his heart. And what about the dog? How in the world did Hank—Ollie—survive the crash?

Jeremiah had been praying that God would heal his heart, wash away the grief that had stung so badly at first. His pain was still close to the surface, and he was acutely aware of the loss. But was the dog’s survival
